DSA Swim Clinic 2020 with Coach Peter Bishop
Educative and Inspiring day with the SASI Team
DSA Swimmers had the special privilege of having some of the best international swimming talent to both train and guide them in competitive swimming. South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) identifies, develops and supports athletes with the potential to perform at the highest national and international levels of sport. The SASI team of Coaches Peter Bishop, Craig Stewart, Tim Rawlins (Performance Analyst) and Luke Knappstein (Strength and Conditioning) were in Malaysia with their athletes as part of their training to prepare them for Tokyo Olympics.
DSA had 32 young swimmers who attended the Swim Clinic and had the privilege of exploring the personalized and improved diving techniques using the technology of video viewing and analysis by Coaches Tim and Craig.
Besides this, Coach Luke was running a series dryland workout to different levels of swimmers to enhance their performance in water. Coach Peter meanwhile was running the stroke and technique work to help swimmers to swim more efficiently and faster.
2016 Olympic Gold Medalist Kyle Chalmers, 2016 Olympian and World Championship Medalist Madison Wilson, and the team of swimmers shared their inspiring experiences as competitive swimmers. All swimmers have their ups and downs regardless what levels of success they have reached, and these world class swimmers shared their stories about how they bounced back and achieved their goals. The SASI swimmers enthralled their young audience demonstrating their finesse and helped in aligning DSA swimmers’ techniques for better performances.
The young DSA swimmers received invaluable advice and feedbacks to their questions from the Olympic level swimmers and no doubt that the swimmers were very high spirited and motivated after participating in the Swim Clinic.

Young DSA swimmers bring back wins from Aussie Meets
DSA Swimmers participate at Asia-Pac Super Splash and WA State Age Swimming Championships
The 2019 Asia-Pac Super Splash two day Swim Meet was held in Perth, Western Australia on 14-15 December. The Meet is an international event to provide emerging swimmers an opportunity to represent their country. Open to swimmers aged 9 years to Open, this event beckoned the young swimmers of DSA to have their taste of overseas competitive participation.
A small team of DSA swimmers and coaches arrived at the world-class HBF Stadium sport complex, which is the only venue to host two FINA World Swimming Championships in Australia. The Stadium 3 Olympic size pools, one indoor and two outdoor are built to cater high-performance use, and has geothermal heating system to ensure the pools are heated to 27 degrees centigrade all year round. The temperature outside however was a blistering 41degrees, something the DSA swimmers were not exposed to and had to take the immense heat in their stride. The training sessions in the heat was very hot for the swimmers but they had the opportunity to train in both the outdoor and indoor environments. The hosts were very welcoming and that helped the swimmers stay focused on their events. The oppressive heat did not affect their performances as the swimmers won a host of medals to bring home.
The tally included Georgene Wee Ee Jern with 6 Golds, 3 Silvers, 1 Bronze; Jerriel Lau – 5 Golds & 4 Silvers; Adam Jeffrey Dillon – 5 Golds & 4 Silvers; Atticus Ng – 5 Golds & 3 Bronzes; Ianna Tan – 2 Silvers & 2 Bronze, Ng Gha Yuan -1 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze; Lim Qi Feng – 2 Bronzes and Benjamin Marc Vijayaratne and Hayley Ng Ee Mun with 1 Bronze each.
The Sunsmart WA State Age Swimming Championships was at a higher level than the Asia-Pac Meet with the events having multiple Heats and Finals. Held between 20-23 December at the HBF Stadium, the Meet had the best swimmers from Western Australia competing and the DSA Swimmers did exceedingly well to reach the finals. Georgene Wee, Adam Jeffrey Dillon and Atticus Ng were the swimmers with Atticus Ng – 4th place in 100m breaststroke and 200m IM; Georgene Wee – 6th place in 800m Free style, 7th in 200m Breaststroke and Adam Jeffrey Dillon – 5th 100m Butterfly (broke the 1:00 for first time). Zadrian Chan Zhi-Weng won the top spot in 50m, 100m Freestyle and Backstroke Multi-Class event (a para event). It was a bit overwhelming and nervousness played on the swimmers as they competed in this high level of competition, but there was plenty to take back from this even for the young DSA swimmers. Overall, it was great exposure for the small group of swimmers and in addition to the enjoyable time it was an immense experience to participate in such international level Meets. All the best for the New Year 2020 Team DSA and many more international Meets to win.
DSA Swim Team finish Swimming Calendar as First Runners-Up
Swimming Club completes the year with 10 Meet Records at the President Cup Meet
DSA Swim Team under DSAS Swimming Club celebrated a glorious finish to the year’s swimming activities with a First Runners-Up position in the 38th President Cup 2019 Inter-Club Swimming Championship. Held at Pusat Akuatik Darul Ehsan, Shah Alam, Selangor Darul Ehsan, the President Cup brings together Swimming Clubs from all over Malaysia, vying for the Top spot and the Championship title.
The young DSA swimmers did the club extremely proud as the final scores saw the Club standing just 67.50 points behind the leader, a massive step up from the previous year when they were at second Runners-Up position, trailing about 400 points behind. This was the biggest team for the Club at the Meet with a total of 316 swimmers roaring support under the DSAS banner.
Outstanding performances included 8 Golds with 7 Meet Records from Alma Louise Bendix Dahl and 4 Golds with 2 Meet Records from Yap Yong Jie. Other outstanding performances were by Sebastien Rion Azlir, Mellissa Nailly Darwin, Chong Hiong Kiet, Chong Xin Lin, Liew Xiao Rou, Liam Eu Li-An (1 Meet Record), Carynn Kay Chan, Fatin Amira Ahmad Hadri, Leong Wan Ying (DSA Coach). Besides these, sterling performances by the young upcoming champions and other swimmers who gave it their all, was the reason that DSAS was within reach of the title and finished at first runners-up spot. A detailed medal tally by the swimmers is given in the table below.
A source of inspiration for the young swimmers is to see their favorite coaches in action, and DSA Coaches Leong Wan Ying, Gerard Goh and Anukul Wong stepped up to the challenge by participating this year. Swimmers were ecstatic and cheered as they witnessed their coaches in action. Leong Wan Ying who was ex Sarawak SUKMA Swimmer, has won a Silver in 50m Butterfly, adding much to the thrills of the young fans.
An added attraction was the presence of DSAS Team Mentor, Dato’ Setia Aubry who visited the venue and the team on the second day of the Meet. He was there to understand the developments in the Malaysian swimming in Selangor and to give encouragement to DSAS swimmers.
Having reached the greatest result in the Meet so far, the Club can look ahead for greater achievements in the future and also look back at the years gone by and recognize the efforts of everyone who had a part to play in the team’s performances. From a very few meets a few years ago, the team now participates in more than 12 Meets every year and this requires the utmost dedication of the Team as a whole. Undoubtedly, there a lot of sacrifices not only by the young swimmers, but also the parents, the coaches and the DSA team members. This large support system of the parents, the DSA swim coaches and all the staff have been at their very best to make these great results happen.
Hats off to the team, thank you DSA Swim Team, One Team, One Dream and all the best for the year 2020.
